Data centres are rewriting demand for the least glamorous parts.
Electrical distribution is a large, unfashionable market being reshaped by a single demand shock. Data-centre build-out is projected to grow more than 40% in 2026 alone and could account for as much as 40% of US electrical distribution by the end of the decade. In that world, certification and domestic origin decide who is allowed to supply.

How the market is structured
US electrical equipment wholesaling is a $261.5 billion category by the broadest measure, with electrical distribution specifically forecast at roughly $180 billion in 2026. Within it sit commodity consumables — cable ties, glands, fixings — sold largely on price through distributors who compete on availability and terms.
Hyperscale data centres consume these consumables at a scale that changes their character. Thousands of ties per rack for high-density fibre bundles turns a commodity into a supply-chain item, and supply-chain items in defense, aerospace and critical infrastructure come with questions about certification, traceability and country of origin that most distributors in this category cannot answer.
Where the opportunity is
The margin is not in the tie. It is in being one of the few suppliers able to answer those questions, which requires domestic manufacturing and certification built in stages rather than claimed in marketing. That is a multi-year path and should be described as one.
Alongside it sits an unglamorous software opportunity: the B2B ordering portals distributors run are frequently insecure, enforcing confidential per-vendor pricing in client-side code where a buyer can simply change it. Rebuilding that properly is table stakes for selling to institutional buyers.
